Community Service and Philanthropy
Beta organizes and runs a "Hockey Booth" at Northwestern's annual Halloween Kid's FairCommunity Service and Philanthropy is a large part of being a Beta. Each Beta is required to do a certain amount of community service each quarter, and brothers participate in all sorts of activities on and off campus to give back to the community, such as tutoring in Evanston, or service-oriented winter and spring break trips.
The chapter itself is involved regularly in the Campus Kitchens program, which distributes donated food to Evanston residents in need. The chapter also produces several events each year, two of which are philanthropic, and two of which are service oriented. Our Powderpuff Football Tournament in the fall and our Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in the spring donate their admission fees to charities. In the winter, the chapter spends a Saturday with Alpha Phi sorority preparing sandwiches to be donated to local homeless shelters and spends another Saturday with Kappa Alpha Theta sorority constructing activity kits for children which are donated to Chicago Children’s Memorial Hospital.
Beta Theta Pi and Gamma Phi Beta at Northwestern University Dance Marathon 2007Beta’s newest and largest philanthropic commitment is it's group Dance Marathon effort with the women of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Each house spends fall and winter quarters raising money to be donated to DM’s beneficiary, culminating in a 30 hour Dance Marathon at the beginning of March in which 20 pledging of Beta and Gamma Phi participated. For our first year, we wrote letters to our family and friends and went “canning” at athletic events to raise money, and we were ecstatic to find out that we had raised $17,800 for this year’s beneficiary, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE.) Overall, Dance Marathon 2007 raised $708,000, and we were honored to be a part of it. Beta is really looking forward to continuing our effort as a tradition in the years to come.
